Train Disruptions in Groningen Due to Track Subsidence

Train travel between Groningen Central Station and Groningen Europapark has been disrupted since Sunday due to track subsidence caused by construction work on the new Esperanto bicycle tunnel. The issue was discovered during routine maintenance, and further investigation revealed that a pipe in the sheet pile wall of the tunnel caused the ground to sink.

Timeline and Repairs

Initially, trains were expected to resume by Tuesday morning, but further inspections revealed the need for extensive repairs. ProRail, the rail infrastructure manager, now aims to restore services by Thursday afternoon. However, safety concerns mean the timeline could still change.

Impact on Train Services

The disruptions affect train routes between Groningen and Winschoten, Veendam, and Assen. Here's the current travel situation:

  • No trains between Groningen Central and Groningen Europapark – replacement buses run every five minutes.

  • Trains running: Intercity and sprinter services are available between Groningen Europapark and Zwolle, as well as local trains to Veendam and Winschoten.

  • Cancelled services: Extra rush-hour sprinters between Groningen and Assen are not running.

Arriva trains also face logistical challenges as some are stranded at the De Vork marshalling yard. This has led to cancellations on other lines, including services between Warffum and Groningen and between Leeuwarden and Sneek.

Additional Challenges

The disruption is not limited to train services. The southern lane of the nearby southern ring road was closed as a precaution due to its proximity to the subsided track but has since reopened. However, construction work continues in the area, adding to the inconvenience.

Next Steps

ProRail is working on a recovery plan while buses continue to shuttle passengers between the affected stations. Travelers are advised to check the NS Travel Planner or contact Arriva for updated schedules.
