What Makes Tonight Special

A supermoon occurs when a full moon coincides with the moon being at or near its closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit, known as perigee. This makes the moon appear noticeably larger and brighter than usual. Tonight's full moon happens close to perigee, making it appear up to 10-14% larger and roughly 30% brighter than when the moon is at its farthest point from Earth. Multiple sources note that this November supermoon is among the closest and brightest of the year.

When to Look Up

The moon will rise in the eastern sky shortly after 5:00 p.m. local time, with slight variations depending on your location. Here are approximate moonrise times for major Dutch cities today, Wednesday, November 5:

  • Groningen: 4:52 p.m.

  • Amsterdam: 5:02 p.m.

  • Rotterdam: 5:05 p.m.

  • The Hague: 5:06 p.m.

The moon will appear largest and most dramatic right at moonrise when it's close to the horizon, often glowing orange or amber due to atmospheric effects. As the evening progresses, it will climb higher in the sky toward the southeast.

Best Viewing Spots in the Netherlands

The key to catching a spectacular moonrise is finding a location with an unobstructed view to the east. Here are recommended viewing areas by region:

Amsterdam area: Head to open waterfronts and dikes along the IJ river and Markermeer lake. Locations like Durgerdam, Uitdam, IJburg, and Zeeburgereiland offer low, clear views to the eastern horizon.

Rotterdam: Look for vantage points with an eastern sightline, such as the shores of Kralingse Plas or waterfront quays that offer views past the city skyline.

The Hague region: Open parks and fields with an eastern horizon work best—try Malieveld, clearings in Haagse Bos, or inland dunes that provide elevated city views.

Utrecht: Fields in the Lunetten or Lepelenburg areas are good options, as is any polder edge east of the city center.

Groningen: The flat northern landscape offers excellent viewing opportunities near Reitdiep or Kardinge fields. Lakes like Hoornsemeer can provide beautiful reflections of the rising moon.

General tip: Choose open, flat terrain such as polders, dikes, or lakesides where buildings won't block your view of the low-rising moon.

Weather Considerations

Dutch weather can be unpredictable in early November, so check your local forecast for cloud cover this evening. Even brief clear spells on the eastern horizon can provide excellent viewing opportunities during moonrise.
