Groningen is transforming into a winter wonderland as preparations for WinterGoud, the city’s month-long festive event, gear up. The Grote Markt and surrounding areas are already showing signs of the season, with iconic features like a towering Christmas tree and a Ferris wheel setting the stage for the holiday atmosphere.
A Majestic Christmas Tree and Ferris Wheel
Today, a massive 15-meter Christmas tree sourced from Kolham was installed on the Grote Markt. Weighing 5.7 tons and decorated with 10,000 lights, the tree will be officially illuminated on December 6 to mark the start of WinterGoud. Additional Christmas trees will also adorn the Nieuwe Markt and Ten Boer.
Nearby, a Ferris wheel will be assembled, adding to the festive charm. It’s part of a larger effort to make the city centre a hub of holiday activity, drawing residents and visitors alike.

The idea for WinterGoud stems from the vision of former mayor Koen Schuiling to create a unified and festive period after Sinterklaas.
