Groningen is transforming into a winter wonderland as preparations for WinterGoud, the city’s month-long festive event, gear up. The Grote Markt and surrounding areas are already showing signs of the season, with iconic features like a towering Christmas tree and a Ferris wheel setting the stage for the holiday atmosphere.

A Majestic Christmas Tree and Ferris Wheel

Today, a massive 15-meter Christmas tree sourced from Kolham was installed on the Grote Markt. Weighing 5.7 tons and decorated with 10,000 lights, the tree will be officially illuminated on December 6 to mark the start of WinterGoud. Additional Christmas trees will also adorn the Nieuwe Markt and Ten Boer.

Nearby, a Ferris wheel will be assembled, adding to the festive charm. It’s part of a larger effort to make the city centre a hub of holiday activity, drawing residents and visitors alike.

WinterGoud Highlights

WinterGoud runs from December 6 to January 5 and features a host of activities for all ages. You can read this article about the full scope of the event, but these are some noteworthy mentions:

- Ice Rink: A large indoor rink in front of Vindicat invites families and friends to skate.

- Winter Café: Warm up with mulled wine, hot chocolate, and other seasonal treats.

- Children’s Train and Christmas Ball: Attractions like a small train and a giant, photogenic Christmas ball made of wire steel will delight visitors.

- Chalets and Christmas Markets: Sixteen wooden chalets will sell festive items, home decorations, and more. These will be complemented by WinterWelvaart, a Christmas market running from December 13 to 15, stretching from the Lage der A to the Grote Markt. Another market for last-minute shoppers will take place on December 21 and 22.

The idea for WinterGoud stems from the vision of former mayor Koen Schuiling to create a unified and festive period after Sinterklaas. With contributions from residents, entrepreneurs, and the municipality, the event aims to bridge the gap between December 5 and the new year with joy, warmth, and community spirit.
