From November 25 to December 10, Groningen will participate in the global Orange the World campaign, raising awareness about violence against women and girls. This initiative highlights alarming statistics: one in three women worldwide experiences violence, 73% of women in the Netherlands face sexual harassment, and every eight days, a woman dies from violence in the country.

Campaign Highlights in Groningen

The campaign kicks off on November 25 with a clay artwork project by artist Natasja Bennink, allowing participants to share their thoughts on sexual violence. Throughout the 16-day period, various activities and exhibitions will promote awareness and action:

  • Rose Campaign: On November 24, Zonta Groningen will hand out roses on the Werkmanbrug to raise awareness.

  • Documentary Screening: On November 26, Ve(e)rkracht will be screened at Forum Groningen, followed by a discussion on sexual violence.

  • Demonstrative Walk: On November 29, the "Not Alone in the Dark" walk will take place in Noorderplantsoen, advocating for safer streets.

  • Interactive Dialogue: Discussions about cultural perspectives on violence against women will be held at Alfa-College on November 25.

Additional events include boot camps, a street harassment chalk-back event, and panel discussions on addressing sexual violence.

How to Help

Violence against women is a pressing issue, but everyone can contribute to change. Here are some ways to take action:

  • As a bystander: Use the 5 D's—Direct intervention, Distract, Delay, Delegate, and Document—to support victims and address inappropriate behaviour.

  • Support victims: Listen, offer support, and encourage them to seek help from professional resources.
