Fake Medical Invoices Are Surging in the Netherlands

If a bill from your dentist lands in your inbox, it is worth looking twice before you pay. Fraudsters in the Netherlands are increasingly sending fake medical invoices by email, using the name of Infomedics, the company that handles billing for most Dutch dental practices, and the number of victims is rising sharply.
A sharp increase
Infomedics, based in Almere, processes more than 80 percent of all dental invoices in the Netherlands and also handles billing for thousands of other care providers, including physiotherapists, mental health services and specialist medical care. According to figures the company gave to RTL Nieuws and De Telegraaf, it has received around 20,000 reports of fraudulent invoices so far this year, compared with only a few dozen in 2025.
How the scam works
The trick is effective because it is well timed. Almost everyone in the Netherlands receives a genuine bill at some point after a visit to the dentist, doctor or physiotherapist, so a message about an outstanding payment does not seem out of place. The scam tends to target people who have recently been to a dentist, physiotherapist, dental hygienist or dietician.
The emails claim that a payment is still outstanding and press the recipient to pay quickly, often by warning of extra costs if they do not act within a few days. They usually contain a link to pay directly. The amounts requested tend to fall in the range of roughly 115 to 175 euros, and the messages often carry a subject line such as “Outstanding claim, Infomedics”, though the company says hundreds of different titles are now in circulation. To look convincing, the fake mails frequently copy the real Infomedics logo and sometimes quote an official-looking file number.
Infomedics says there has been no data breach at the company itself. Instead, it believes the criminals are using personal details obtained from other data leaks, and buying up email addresses to send messages that closely resemble a real bill.

How to recognise a fake
The company has been clear about how it actually works, which makes the fakes easier to spot. Infomedics says it always communicates in the name of the care provider, meaning the practice where you had your appointment, a detail a scammer would not know. It sends payment requests only from the email address rekening@infomedics.nl, and warns that any message from a slightly different address, even one letter off, should be deleted immediately.
Two other points are worth remembering. Infomedics says it never sends a direct payment link by email, and it never asks for payment by text message or phone. Any SMS or call requesting payment of a bill is therefore always fake. A genuine email will also show your name at the top and state which provider the bill is from; the fake ones typically do not.
What to do
The advice from Infomedics and consumer organisations is straightforward. Do not click on links in these messages, and do not transfer any money. If you are unsure whether a bill is real, do not use the link in the email; instead, check with your dental practice or care provider, or log in to your account through the official Infomedics website. The company also offers an online tool on its own site to help people check suspicious messages.
If you have already clicked or paid, act quickly. Contact your bank as soon as possible to block or report the payment, and report the fraud to the Fraudehelpdesk, the national fraud reporting point, so that others can be warned.
