Eindhoven Students Build a Solar-Powered Ambulance for Remote Areas
Solar Team Eindhoven has presented the Stella Juva, which the students say is the world's first ambulance to run on solar power and also charge its medical equipment.

A student team from Eindhoven has presented what it says is the world’s first solar-powered ambulance, a vehicle designed to bring medical care to places where fuel and electricity are hard to come by.
What it is
The ambulance, called Stella Juva, was unveiled by Solar Team Eindhoven, a student group from Eindhoven University of Technology, at an official presentation on Tuesday. “This is the world’s first solar ambulance,” student Yarno Basten told the regional broadcaster Omroep Brabant.
According to the team, the vehicle is the first ambulance designed to run entirely on solar energy while also supplying power to all of the medical equipment on board. In other words, the sun both moves the ambulance and keeps the devices used to treat patients running.
Built for off-grid regions
The idea behind Stella Juva is to reach people who are currently hard to help. In many remote areas, poor roads and a lack of fuel or reliable electricity make it difficult both to get to patients and to deliver care once there. A vehicle that generates its own power from the sun could offer an alternative in exactly those places, the team says, providing an option for regions where fuel or power shortages limit access to healthcare.

A team with a track record
Solar Team Eindhoven is well known in the world of solar vehicles. The group builds a new solar car every couple of years and has won the family-car class of the World Solar Challenge, a major solar race across Australia, four times in a row. Its expertise also comes from earlier projects such as Stella Terra, an off-road solar car that drove more than 1,000 kilometres across the Sahara. For the ambulance, the students worked with specialist partners, including a Dutch supplier that provided key vehicle components.
What happens next
For now, Stella Juva is a concept rather than a vehicle in everyday service. In August, the team plans to put it to the test in practice, visiting field locations of local aid organisations to show how it can support patient care and safely charge and run medical equipment in places that are normally out of reach for conventional emergency services. Whether the idea can eventually be turned into ambulances used in the field will depend on how those tests go, but as a demonstration of what solar power might do for healthcare in remote regions, it is a striking piece of work from a group of Dutch students.
