A bullet flew through the window of a moving city bus in Rotterdam during a shooting on Monday evening, though none of the roughly ten passengers on board was injured. A man who was on the street was wounded and taken to hospital, and police have arrested a suspect.
What happened
The shooting took place at around 7 pm on the Oranjeboomstraat, in the Feijenoord district in the south of the city. According to the police, a man was wounded and taken to hospital with injuries whose severity has not been made public. It is not yet clear what led to the shooting, and police said several shell casings were found on the street.
As the shooting unfolded, a bus operated by the Rotterdam transport company RET happened to be passing. According to local reporting, one of the bullets passed straight through the vehicle, entering through a window on one side and leaving through a window on the other.

On the bus
An RET spokesperson said that around ten people were on the bus when it was struck. “They were sitting at the back, but no one was hurt,” the spokesperson told the regional broadcaster Rijnmond. The driver was also unharmed. Even so, those on board were badly shaken. The RET spokesperson described the driver as extremely shocked, and, according to local reporting, the driver and at least two passengers were visibly distressed. An ambulance was called to the scene to look after the people involved.
The investigation
Police arrested a man shortly after the shooting. He was tasered during the arrest, and officers said his exact role in the incident was still being investigated. They did not say what he was suspected of.
Forensic officers examined the surrounding streets and the bus itself, and the area was cordoned off for the investigation. As well as the bus, a bullet struck a ground-floor home on the Oranjeboomstraat, and blood was found on a parked car nearby. Police have asked anyone who saw or heard something, or who has camera footage, to come forward, by phone on 0900-8944 or anonymously on 0800-7000.
